My wife's great-grandmother was Olive LALIBERTE, born 21 May 1838 in Fr. Canada, died 3 Jul 1937 in Montague, MA. Married Peter Vincent 3 Nov 1857 in St. Gabriel, Brandon, Quebec. Had 17 children (4 born in MA all the rest in Canada). Parents were Alex LALIBERTE and Marie MIRON. We know a lot about her descendants but nothing about her ancestors. Family folk lore (maybe truth) says she may have been a Mohican princess. Esther DeLeon in CT says she gave Olive's attire to a museum in CT.
We would love to learn more about Olive and or any of her Canadian born children.
Please feel free to contact me via e-mail.

Eliakim WINCHELL was a grandson of John VAN GILDER. He lived in
the Town of Egremont in MA. I only know he died before April 6,
1868 in Mount Washington, MA. I would like to know who he
married. And since he had a families of small children in 1782
and 1818, was he married twice?
His son George married Sarah LIVINGSTON, born June 5, 1810 in Ancram, NY, and died in Great Barrington, MA, Sept. 24, 1864. On her death certificate it said her father was Daniel LIVINGSTON. He cannot be the other three LIVINGSTONS I found records for (unless there was something not noted in the records). There is mention of a band of Mohicans who did not move west who were called LIVINGSTONS. Has anyone heard of the LIVINGSTONS (no, not the rich Scottish ones) and has anyone heard of Daniel?
Annis was the wife of Jared BISHOP (b. Aug. 17, 1753 in Guilford, CT and died Nov. 24, 1839 in Berkshire County, MA). In 1778 he lived in Stockbridge, MA. Jared and Annis were married between 1782 and 1791 when their children were. Was she Mohican?

Brotherton descent. I can trace most of my family back many
generations, to a Sarah Amel WELCH, Thomas and Electa TOUSEY,

My Great Great Grandmother was Cylinda LITTLEMAN. Her father was
Peter LITTLEMAN. My Grandmother, Nora MORIARTY said they were of
the Stockbridge Munsee Tribe in Wisconsin. As I received a check
from the BIA in Ashland Wis. after she passed away I presume this
to be true. Also there were full blooded Indians at my
Grandfather's funerel.
As my Grandmother liked to tell me about the Indian side of her family, I've always been interested.
I was wondering if you could give me any info. on how to contact the reservation on the web or other so I can find more about the Littleman family, past and present.
Thanks, Dan

Hi !
I'm trying to find out about my Ancestors. My name is Barry Warren THOMAS. I was born on 12/19/47. My Father's name is Warren Delmar THOMAS; He was born on 6/10/18 (in Middlesex, Vermont). My Dad's Father's name was Orville THOMAS. I think he was born in what is now Quebec Province in Canada. I'm not sure of his birth date, but it was obviously before the turn of the 20th Century. My father cannot remember her name but he believes his Grandmother was half Mahican Indian. I would like to find out more about Mahican (Mohican) Indians in the Quebec area around this time to help me trace my geneology. Any information you have would appreciated.
Thanks for your help.

I am researching my family history and would appreciate any information that anyone may have concerning the surname CHICKS of Stockbridge-Munsee-Mohican ancestry. I have gone back as far as Benjamin KOKHKEWENAUNAUNT, born abt 1670-1675. He arrived in Stockbridge (Mass) in the 1740's, when he was in his late 60's. He has been identified as one of the last hereditary chiefs of the Muh-he-con-new Nation. He resigned as sachem in 1771 at the age of 94. I have relatives living at the Stockbridge-Munsee Community in Bowler, WI. If anyone has any information about the CHICKS surname please e-mail at the above address.
Thank you,

My parents and I have been researching our family ancestry. My surname is WALTON, my grandfather's name was Henry WALTON. The research so far has determined they lived primarily in CT. We have found the family tree with the names of Charles CHURCH 1800's. Daniel TYLER of NY 1600's. Sabra WALTON 1850 of CT., and the important name of Lucy CHURCH whom we believed married a Mohegan indian. Now I know difference in tribes, but we want to research now the other records concerning the Mohican , the Brotherton tribe, etc. Since church records are incomplete as well as city/state records, we only ask for some direction, and any resources you may to offer. If I am unclear in my email, forgive me.
My step-mom has been doing all the leg work, researching at various libraries in CT. She did come across a name of Samson, manservant to a Daniel TYLER. That is how it was recorded in one of her searches.
I thank you will continue on the ancestry quest.
Thank you

I am trying to trace lost relatives. I am a descendant of MARY KATHERINE "KATE" HARING, born April 1855 in Southern NY, Ulster, Orange or Rockland Counties. KATE was Mahican and the daughter of CAROLINE HARING (also Mahican), born approximately 1820 in NY. CAROLINE also had two other last names HISS and BENSON (possibly from other marriages - it is not known which was her maiden name).
KATE married James R.P. DECKER in March 1870 in Rockland County. She had 5 children, 4 of whom lived. All the children were given away for farm work and the family broken up. I am trying to find these lost relatives. If you have any information about MARY KATHERINE HARING, please email me at chova@worldnet.att.net Thanks.

I am a college student in South Dakota who, a few years ago, discovered that I have Native American heritage. After speaking with my parents, I learned that my mother, Barbara WHITEHEAD-MORELAND, is possibly descended from members of the Mohican tribe. Supposedly, my great-grandfather was a half- or full-blooded Mohican. My grandfather's name was Theodore MORELAND, and he was married to my grandmother, Evelyn MORELAND-WAKEFIELD. My great-grandfather's name in unknown to me (It may also be MORELAND, but it may also be HATFIELD, FITZGERALD, or WAKEFIELD), but I do know that his family originated in the Hocking Hills of Ohio and West Virginia, and in Wheeling, West Virginia. After the Appalachian coal mines forced my great-grandfather into poverty, he and his family moved to Columbus, Ohio, where my mother was born, and it also where the majority of the MORELAND and WAKEFIELD families reside.
In addition to my mother's family, my father's people may also be descended from Native Americans, possibly Mohicans. I know that my paternal grandfather's name was William Whitehead, who was born either in Storm Lake, Iowa, Rapid City, South Dakota, or somewhere in New York. My paternal great-grandfather (the man whom my uncle believes was at least one-quarter Indian) was named Amos MORE, MOORE, or MOOR. I have been informed that he originated in New York state.
I desire very much to fully discover my Native American heritage because I can feel it in my heart and in my blood. The problem is that I don't know where to start looking. Any suggestions would be welcome to initiate my search for my ancestry.

Dear Ms. Winchell:
I too, am a long lost Mahican, decended from the Stockbridge people. My ancestors regretfully, long ago assimilated in to the general Berkshire population leaving me with little knowledge of my native heritage. All that know is restricted to a handfull of fragmented family tales that offer little substance. I have always hoped to someday make the trip to Wisconsin. I have always felt the spirit of my Native American heritage and deeply appreciate anything the permits me to connect with the past, your web page let me feel the spirits once again.
If you have any knowledge of the family name RHODES or RHOADES in the Sheffield / Stockbridge area I would appreciate hearing from you. As a young child, I remember my Great Grand Father, Irving Rhoades. He died in 1958 at the age of 88. It is believed by his grand children, one of which is my mother, that Irving's father was the last full blooded Mahican. Although young at the time, I remember my GGrandfather quite well. Even at his advanced age, he was strongly built man whose skin color and facial features supported his Mahican ancestory.
Best regards,

We are working on my wife's genealogy. Her maiden name is MONSEY. We thought it would be of assistance if we could determine after whom MONSEY, NY was named (a small town in Rockland County, NY) . A few random inquiries tell me the town was named after an Indian Tribe or its Chieftan. However, my research of the New York Native American Tribes, especially the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican group, suggests that there is no connection whatsoever. Have you any information or comments on this? It seems no one in Monsey, NY who is on-line has any hard facts about the origin of their town. Thank you for any information or comments you might have.

Hi ! Like many others, I am searching for my Indian Heritage. Somewhere back in my paternal grandmother's family, a man married a Wappinger Indian woman. Since this was apparently considered very shameful back then, all records of this man were stricken from all family records. I have very little information, and that is what I'm hoping someone may be able to help me with.
We DO know that the Chief of the tribe was Daniel NIMHAM, and that this took place in the Dutchess County area, possibly around Fishkill, NY. It is possible that the man who married the Wappinger was either a VERPLANCK or a STORM (my grandmother's family). I'd like to try and pinpoint the ancestor, of course, but pinpointing a time frame would also be helpful.
I know that the Wappinger's all but disappeared, but I am hoping that some records exist with someone, somewhere. I have utterly no interest in making any claims to current tribal endeavors, I would just like to fill in this "hole" in our ancestry. I am learning more every day of the Indians of the Hudson Valley.
If anyone has any additional sources of information they can share, I would be thankful (I'm already pursuing the Ruttenber books, and I've corresponded with Lee Sutlzman).
Thanks !

My NEWELL surname can be traced back to Westchester Co., NY. The family lore is that an Indian Chief fell in love with a white woman and left his tribe, took on the name of Squire NEWELL. I have heard this or similar stories from 4-5 different family members. One relative said there were 'reservation papers' but he didn't know who in the family had them. I was told that the tribe was the Mohegan or Mahican Nation. There was also mention of Stockbridge Indians.
My great grandfather was Squire B. NEWELL, b. August 1829 possibly at Mt. Pleasant in Westchester Co., NY State. This is on the East side of the Hudson River, near SingSing and Sleepy Hollow. On the 1840 census in that same county in NY, there was a head of household named Squire NEWELL. That same census gave the family members ages as:
Males: one (10-15); one (20-30); one (60-70).
Females: 2 (20-30); one (50-60)
The young Squire B. NEWELL would have been 11 years old at the census, so
he fits the (10-15) age group. Where does the Squire NEWELL who is head
of household fit? If he is in the (60-70) age group, he would be the
grandfather (this is what I'm thinking). If he's in the (20-30) age
group, he's the father of young Squire B. NEWELL.
If the family lore is correct, I'm guessing that the grandfather is the Squire NEWELL (elder). That would put his birth around 1780-90.
Squire B. NEWELL came to Marion County, WV, with his father in about 1850. There is no record of the name of his father--only mention early in the county records of a Robert NEWELL, but cannot verify that this is his father. He married a Lucy HIGGINBOTHAM there and had 11 living children with her: Willard L., Nathan B., Lucian Amos, Delia Harriet, Emorancy, James Thomas, Lloyd, Charles, Milley (Minnie), Rachel and Riley H. (twins). Riley Harry NEWELL is my grandfather. He died in 1906 at a young 32 years of age, probably from black lung.

My third greatgrandmother was a munsee from Rockland County, NY. She was married to a Mathew CONKLING. Family lore has it that there is a connection with Wisconsin. A son named Daniel married a Julia HILLS and went west only to return a few years later a widower with two children one of which was my greatgrandfather Charles Wesley CONKLING. I believe Mathew was born c. 1795 and the major porion of this scenario occured between 1800 and 1845.
Perhaps Daniel went west of his mothers people?
Perhaps Julia HILLS is buried in Wisconsin at the Munsee cemetery there?
Perhaps Mathew had something to do with the relocatio of the munsee?
I could go on and on with hipothetical questions!
If anyone has any thing that fits with scenario I would very very much appreciate hearing from you, thaky you.

I am looking for the parents of George Thomas Bennett, a Stockbridge Mohican born 22 August 1823 in Cedar Hill, Albany Co., New York, and died 7 October 1902, married to Margaret Larose. He came to Wisconsin at age six. Family tradition says that his father was a John Bennett. I am also trying to learn why he and his family (father-in-law Alexander Larose a.k.a. Alexis Deguire, wife, daughter Elsie Jane, and son Jerome or George Jerome) left the Green Bay area for Kansas by birchbark canoe around 1858-1859, probably accompanied by the family of a cousin Peter Bennett. Hi, Debra -
Am really enjoying your web page - just found out about it from a 2nd cousin in Yuma, AZ.
I'm wondering if your research has ever "taken" you to the Berlin/Petersburg area of Renssalaer County. Part of my family's lore says that my g-g- grandfather, Benjamin Jones' wife, Mathilda (or, Matilda), was a Native American, most likely Mohican. I have found the family in the Federal Census records of 1840 and 1850, living in Berlin, but have no idea what Mathilda's surname might be. The family broke up between 1850 and 1855 with the 4 then living kids being "farmed" out to different local families. All trace of Benjamin and Mathilda disappear from 1840 until Benjamin reappears in the 1880 census, living in Petersburg. It appears that Mathilda died just before 1855 and Benjamin couldn't care for the family alone so "bailed out."
Anyway, I'm wondering if you know of any sources that I might tap into to see if, assuming that Mathilda was Native American, I might be able to find out anything about Mathilda.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Debra,
Hello! I trying to validate family lore about a Mohican ancestor. And wondered if you might be able to provide some insight.
My grandmother, Mabel E. (Noble) Evers told the story of her mother, Della May (Swan) Noble being a Mohawk. Della Swan was born in Lanesboro, Berkshire, MA. 27 Dec 1868. Her father was Jeremiah Swan from Stephentown, New York (b abt 1828) and her mother was Martha A. (Presbrey) Swan from Lanesboro, Mass. (b abt 1843). I am in the process of trying to locate Jeremiah's birth record so I can discover his parents names. I presume that the Mohican line would be the Swan side, Presbrey just doesn't sound Native American (unless the connection is further back).
My question for you, is how do you validate the Native American connection? What type of records were kept that could be researched? Are there some kind of tribal records which might be useful? Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
